When dealing with respiratory illness, sometimes you just have to go through all the stages of cold and flu. At times, you know you’re fine, but how do you deal with the disruptive symptoms like constant coughing that makes all the needed rest impossible?
Here are some of the home remedies to soothe itchy throat that we’ve tried and found to be effective so far.
Lemon and Honey
You can mix this with or without tea (without if we give this to the young children), but sometimes when they have sore throat, they would complain that the lemon makes their throat hurt. So, sometimes I just take a one teaspoon of honey and let it melt in their mouth (without the lemon). We also only use raw or Manuka honey.
Mint
Tried and true remedy, this almost never fails for adults, but could be too strong for children. You can either add fresh mint leaves to a cup of tea or I personally like to chew it and gulp it down with warm water.
Chamomile Tea
This is a new find for me. Just recently our child had a coughing fit for over 30 minutes almost non-stop. I offered honey, but he refused, so I remembered we still had a stash of organic chamomile tea in the pantry and although I’ve heard this before, it never occured to me to try it for this purpose. So with nothing else to lose, I just brewed a bag with 8-oz hot water and let him sip with a small spoon. In less than 5 minutes, the coughing stopped and he was able to sleep. What’s amazing it did not even take half a cup for it to take effect. This is definitely a new favorite for now for our children.
